4-star historic hotel overlooking Abbey Gardens in Bury St. Edmunds

Dining & Culinary Experiences

The Eaterie serves a fiercely seasonal menu that earned the hotel recognition at the Suffolk Business Awards for BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE. Guests can dine inside one of Suffolk's few surviving 12th-century underground vaults, built from the same stone as the Abbey. The hotel also hosts themed afternoon teas, Sunday Sessions, Friday Night Socials, and Steak Nights throughout the year.

Rooms & Accommodations

The hotel offers 77 uniquely designed bedrooms, many with views of the Abbey Ruins and deep copper bath tubs. Room features include bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities, and a dedicated trouser press. Pet-friendly rooms come with dog bowls and toys provided on arrival.

Location & Surroundings

The Angel Hotel sits opposite Abbey Gardens on Angel Hill, one of the prettiest squares in the country. It is a short walk from Theatre Royal and The Apex for evening shows, and a 15-20 minute walk from the train station. The town centre, with shops along Abbeygate Street, is directly next door.

Pet-Friendly Amenities

Dogs are welcome throughout the hotel, with dedicated pet bowls provided in the room and toys as a welcome touch. The hotel's bar area is dog-friendly, allowing guests to dine with their pets near an open fire. Pet owners can request ground-floor rooms to avoid stairs during their stay.

Parking & Concierge Services

The hotel provides valet parking for £7.50 per 24 hours, with on-site spaces offered on a first-come, first-served basis. A dedicated concierge team handles car parking arrangements and luggage assistance at all times. A 24-hour front desk is available for late arrivals and special requests.

“The Angel Hotel, despite a few recurring complaints regarding service consistency and room upkeep, stands out with its historic charm and central location near Abbey Gardens; its award-winning restaurant aims to please, with a menu driven by local ingredients and collaborative dining events. It is a place with character, especially for those seeking a romantic getaway and themed afternoon teas. For loyal customers, I believe the hotel needs to ensure they feel valued.”

Mixed feelings about this stay

paved area view poor service
The location was acceptable, being right in the centre of things.
The room I booked did NOT have the city view I expected. Instead, it faced a paved area between buildings. I also found the staff to be SLACK and the service poor.

Acceptable Stay, but Issues Noted

peeling paint contradictory information
The location was quite convenient.
The room I received, a "Classic Room", showed signs of wear. Peeling paint in the bathroom detracted from the experience. I encountered some issues regarding the clarity of parking instructions. Contradictory information from the staff led to UNNECESSARY stress.
